Blavat was born on July 3, 1940, in South Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in the United States. His father was Jewish, and his mother was Italian. Blavat got married but has been living separately from her wife since 1976. The couple had four daughters together.

The popular Philadelphia, PA, icon and American disc jockey, Jerry Blavat, gained local fame as he used to host live dances in his area, which eventually led to his own independent radio show. Through his show, Blavat introduced many acts from the 1960s to a wider audience, which included the Four Seasons and the Isley Brothers. His nightclub, Memories, where he DJs during the summer, has been operating in Margate, New Jersey, since 1972.

Blavat was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Philadelphia Music Alliance in 1993. In 1993, he was added to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a part of a permanent exhibit in its Radio and Records Museum. In 2002, he was inducted into Philadelphia’s Broadcast Pioneers “Hall of Fame.” Since January 2002, he has been doing annual oldies concerts at the Kimmel Center for Performing Arts in Philadelphia. 

In July 2011, Blavat published his own autobiography, “You Only Rock Once: My Life in Music,” under the publisher Running Press. After its third printing, the book was released in paperback two years later and was released as an audiobook in 2014.
